West Lothian Police Focus On Doorstep Crime
Press Office, Fettes
Lothian and Borders Police are today launching the enforcement phase of their campaign to target bogus callers.
As part of the 'Focus on Doorstep Crime' operation, officers in West Lothian will work closely with partners from West Lothian Council, Trading Standards and Environmental Wardens, the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) and Customs and Excise.
A series of road checks will be put in place in to identify individuals involved in committing bogus caller offences.
At the same time, Community Police Officers across West Lothian will be visiting lunch clubs and community centres to provide advice and guidance to the elderly community in how to avoid becoming a victim of these types of offences.
Lothian & Borders Police, Lothian Fire and Rescue Service and West Lothian Council along with various other organisations have recently joined forces to deliver a series of events aimed at protecting older people from bogus callers.
The first event took place at the Lanthorn Centre, Dedridge on Thursday and was hailed as a success by those who participated.
There will be two further prevention events taking place on Wednesday 17th march at Craigsfarm Centre, and 24th March at the Regal Theatre, Bathgate
Inspector Stephen Elliot from Lothian & Borders Police explained, 'We are sending out a clear message that we will do our utmost to challenge criminal activity robustly through targeted enforcement to safeguard the community.
'We will also work to empower older people by giving them the skills and knowledge to protect them from the unscrupulous criminals who commit doorstep crimes against older people.
'The events provide information on how to deal with doorstep criminals and stay safe with an innovative show from the Baldy Bane Theatre Group called 'One foot in the door', and an opportunity to obtain police advice and to speak to representatives from the other agencies involved.'
Peter Johnston, Leader of West Lothian Council, said: It is important that West Lothian Council, the Police, Community Councils and the wider community work in partnership to ensure that our residents not only feel safe within their communities but strengthen their community spirit by helping to deter potential criminals.
'This is just the latest action to improve community safety and the quality of life for people in West Lothian, and this phase of Operation Focus has underlined our commitment to tackling antisocial behaviour and criminal activity in West Lothian.
'We are determined that every action possible will be taken to ensure West Lothian remains a safe and pleasant place to live, work and do business.'
