Public Performance Reporting

Public Performance Reporting (PPR) gives stakeholders information that allows them to make informed judgements about services, to contribute to decisions about what standards of service should be, and to challenge performance in the interests of future service improvement. To be productive PPR has to involve the right information going to the right people in the right way at the right time. Lothian and Borders Police intends to report and record the Force's progress in terms of its performance in ways which will engage stakeholders in the improvement process. Performance information is already widely available in a variety of ways including most notably the Chief Constable's Annual Report "For The Record". However recent consultation on amendments to the Local Government Scotland Act 2003, specifically about Public Performance Reporting arrangements, has suggested that public organisations including Police Forces should publish information on recommendations for improvement that have been made by external scrutiny bodies along with the progress made against these recommendations.

The recommendations made by external scrutiny bodies and progress updates, since 1st April 2003, are:

Customer Satisfaction Survey Rolling Programme

As a Force we feel that it is important to consult regularly with members of the public who have contacted us. We do this to assess satisfaction with the way in which we deal with various aspects of our work. We also seek suggestions on how we can improve the quality of the services we provide.

A rolling programme of consultation commenced in July 2005. Each month questionnaires are sent to a random selection of 300 people, who have recently contacted us, from across the Force area.

The returns are reviewed and may result in action plans being drawn up to change, or improve, either internal processes or our service to the public.

Staff Opinion Survey

The 2005 Staff Opinion Survey ascertains the opinions of staff on issues such as working life, line management and leadership and about the affect of recent and forthcoming changes on the Force.  The survey provides management with an assessment of the Force’s performance in these areas, and identifies progress made since the previous survey of 2003.  It also suggests areas for improvement.

The Force is committed to making improvements based on the results of the survey.  It is one way to capture staff opinions; which are valued, listened to and addressed. It also helps us to improve service to the public.
