I recently called the police and I’m not sure when they’re going to arrive.
At certain times of day there are many demands made on the police service, and a system of prioritisation is necessary. The highest priority is on those calls that require the greatest ‘urgency’, and calls are not judged on relative’ importance’. See our Call Grading policy for more details.

I want to know what information the police hold on me, how long will it take and how much it costs.
Under Data Protection legislation individuals have the right of access to information held about them, whether on computer systems or in certain manual/paper format. To obtain the information, complete an application form and submit it with payment and identification to any local Lothian and Borders Police Station. The cost is £10 and the response will be within 40 days.

A catalogue company announces that it has delivered goods to an address although the occupant denies receiving these and there is no proof of delivery. The company has now written requesting full payment of goods lost.
The caller should be advised that unless there is evidence of theft they should consider contacting Citizens Advice or a solicitor.

I live in privately rented accommodation and my landlord has told me to leave without notice. Can he do this?
If the landlord wants the tenant to leave so that s/he can get possession of the property, s/he has to write to the tenant giving notice that the tenant should leave. If the tenant does not leave, the landlord must go to court and apply for an order telling the tenant to leave. If you are asked to leave your home by the landlord you should consult an experienced adviser, such as a Citizens Advice Bureau.
