I would like to enquire about compensation for criminal injuries. Whom do I talk to?

Could you tell me the legislation surrounding crossbows?

It is an offence for any person under the age of 17 to possess a crossbow, which is capable of discharging a missile, unless the person is under the supervision of someone over the age of 21. It is also an offence to lend or hire a crossbow to anyone under the age of 17.

Do I need to register a home CCTV system with the Police or Information Commissioner?

No. The Information Commissioner has indicated that systems installed for home security purposes do not need to be registered. You do not need to register your system with the police, but we will note you have one if you wish.

Do I need to display warning signs if I have a home security CCTV system?

Signs are not mandatory for home security CCTV systems, but they are recommended as a deterrent.

I have a CCTV System. What am I allowed to point the cameras at?

Anything within your own property, including your car on the road outside. You should not show neighbouring property, where possible.

I can smell gas. What should I do?

If it is within your own property and it is safe to do so, turn off the gas supply and open windows and doors. The free-phone gas emergency number is 0800 111 999, regardless of your mains supplier. Do not turn on switches or light a naked flame.

What should I do about nuisance and obscene telephone calls?

Try dialling 1471 immediately to find out if the caller's number is registered. If there is a number, keep a note of it. If the calls are frequent, it is worth keeping a pen and paper by the phone to note down the time and date of each call. Contact your service provider e.g. BT or Telewest etc. for further information as each one has a different policy for dealing with these types of calls. They may advise you to report the calls to the police who will give you an incident number. You should retain this number for future reference and also give it to your service provider so they can assist the police.

What can the police do about my noisy neighbours?

Unless there are other circumstances which warrant police attendance, complaints of domestic noise, persistent alarms, dogs barking etc, are dealt with by the local environmental health officer.

I have found what I think is obscene material/racist material on a web site. Who should I report this to?

In the first instance view this website www.iwf.org.uk. They work in partnership with the Police to try and erradicate these types of material.

Can you tell me the telephone number for Crimestoppers?

The number is 0800 555111. Call at any time with information about any crime. Callers may receive a reward, and anonymity is maintained throughout. Your call is free and cannot be traced.
